BACK TO THE ICE
by Glenn Grant
First performed at the McMurdo Coffee House in April 2001.
Lyrics are based on events that happened that winter.
Chords: A D A (E A) (repeats)
Summer in McMurdo
is just ugly in bright light
but winter should be prettier
and that's something I'd like
So I found myself a winter job
and I'm staying for the night
and the voices now are happier
because I passed my psych
Chorus:
The first time for adventure and the
second for the money
they say you are a lifer if you
go there more than twice
the third because my friends are there and
I can't function anywhere so
I keep going
back to the ice
Has this winter met with your
pre-season expectations?
Have your safety meeting topics
kept you all alive?
I've thought of a new cost savings
that I'll give as a suggestion
We have the aliens do the medevac
and I'll get my level 5
[Acappella/rap:]
Now have you heard the word of the day?
it starts with V and it ends in A
and this word rhymes pretty good with
Carolina
but we can't say it -- it's offensive
and some folks are sensitive
but you know I am friendly to
your...so fine...ahh
[Chorus]
I've been here and I've done that
and most things in between
I have a storage locker up in Maine
and a house in Denali
my home address is a P.O. Box
in a state I've never seen
and the IRS thinks I work in
the Ross Dependency
Palmer Station has the rain
and McMurdo has the mud
You could be seasick on the ships
or frozen at the pole
the days are long and the pay is low
and we all get the crud
I think next year I'll get a life
out at Johnston Atoll
[Chorus]
